LOCATION

The University of Ghana has two campuses: the Accra city campus and the Legon campus. I will talk about the latter.Legon campus is located about 15km east of the central Accra area. Suburbs around the school are described in relation to the school, for example, East Legon, North Legon etc. The very suburb, Legon, is identified with the school, and vice versa. Usually, when a passenger says s/he is getting of at Legon, it is assumed s/he is alighting on or near the school campus (Public transport vehicles plying some destinations pass through or near the campus. Some of these routes the buses ply are:Accra central to Adenta (and destinations along the way)Adenta to Lapaz, Dansoman and destinations along the wayAchimota to Adenta and destinations along the wayEtc.(Now I think you may have guessed that there is open access to the school. If so, you’re right. There is no wall which encloses the campus. For this reason you can’t tell, at a glance, whether a person is a student/lecturer or not. That can only be done upon inspecting the person’s ID card. Some outsiders use this opportunity to steal from students. (Many students dry their clothes outside, in the sun. There are also thefts of electronic gadgets like mobile/cell phones and laptops from inside students’ rooms. But if a person is caught stealing, he (the culprits are almost always male!) is roughly handled and mistreated. However such incidents have reduced as a result of tighter security). Also, branches of banks and other financial institutions, hospitals, ATM machines, the police station, etc which are on or near the campus are identified with the school, for example, Legon hospital, Barclays Bank, Legon branch, etc.Unless otherwise stated, I’m referring to the University of Ghana whenever I say ‘Legon’.
